Tiếng Việt không phân biệt "anh ấy làm" với "họ làm", còn tiếng Anh thì có: he works, they work. Quy tắc nghe thì đơn giản, nhưng TOEIC gài bẫy bằng cách đặt chủ ngữ ở xa động từ, giữa là một cụm dài có danh từ khác số. Bài này giúp bạn luôn tìm ra chủ ngữ thật và chia động từ cho đúng.
Quy tắc cơ bản
- Chủ ngữ số ít (he, she, it, danh từ số ít, danh từ không đếm được) + động từ số ít: The manager approves…, The information is…, The staff member has…
- Chủ ngữ số nhiều + động từ số nhiều: The managers approve…, Our clients are…, They have…
- Chỉ thì hiện tại (và was / were) mới thay đổi theo số. Quá khứ đơn và động từ sau will, can, should thì không: he worked / they worked; he will work / they will work.
Bẫy 1: cụm giới từ chen giữa
Danh từ đứng ngay trước động từ thường không phải chủ ngữ.
- The quality of the products has improved. (chủ ngữ là quality, không phải products)
- The results of the survey are available online.
- One of our suppliers is located in Da Nang. (One of + danh từ số nhiều → động từ số ít)
- The boxes on the top shelf need to be moved.
Cách làm: gạt bỏ cụm giới từ (of…, in…, on…, for…, with…) như đã học ở bài cấu trúc câu.
Bẫy 2: mệnh đề quan hệ và cụm bổ nghĩa
- The engineer who designed the new machines is from Germany.
- Applicants interested in the position should submit a résumé.
- Bên trong mệnh đề quan hệ, động từ hòa hợp với danh từ mà who / which / that thay thế: customers who live…, a customer who lives…

Bẫy 4: danh từ không đếm được
Các danh từ sau không có dạng số nhiều và luôn đi với động từ số ít trong TOEIC: information, equipment, furniture, luggage / baggage, advice, feedback, research, machinery, merchandise, software, mail, news, clothing, stationery.
- ✗ The informations are… → ✓ The information is…
- ✓ The new equipment arrives on Monday.
- Muốn đếm: a piece of equipment, two pieces of advice, an item of merchandise.
