Nhận diện từ loại qua hậu tố: đoán đúng cả từ chưa biết
Bảng hậu tố danh từ, động từ, tính từ, trạng từ theo nhóm, các ngoại lệ hay gài bẫy và cách phân biệt danh từ chỉ người với danh từ chỉ việc.

Ở bài trước, bạn đã biết ô trống cần từ loại nào. Bước còn lại là nhận ra đáp án nào thuộc từ loại đó. Với từ quen thì dễ, nhưng đề thường dùng từ ít gặp như reliability, cooperatively, mandatory. Cách nhanh nhất là nhìn hậu tố (phần đuôi của từ). Khoảng 30 hậu tố dưới đây đủ để bạn đoán đúng phần lớn các trường hợp.
Hậu tố danh từ

Part 5 rất hay cho hai danh từ cùng gốc, một chỉ người và một chỉ việc: The ____ will be interviewed next week → applicants (người được phỏng vấn), không phải applications. Khi gặp cặp này, hỏi: chỗ trống là ai hay cái gì? Và nhớ: danh từ đếm được chỉ người, số ít, cần mạo từ (an applicant).

Hậu tố trạng từ
Phần lớn trạng từ là tính từ + -ly: efficient → efficiently, recent → recently, considerable → considerably, automatic → automatically.
- -ly nhưng là tính từ: friendly, costly, timely, likely, lively, orderly, weekly, monthly. "a timely response" (phản hồi kịp thời), "a costly mistake".
- -al nhưng là danh từ: approval, proposal, arrival, professional (người chuyên nghiệp), potential (tiềm năng).
- -ive nhưng là danh từ: representative (người đại diện), executive (giám đốc điều hành), initiative (sáng kiến), objective (mục tiêu), alternative (phương án khác).
- Trạng từ không có -ly: fast, hard, late, early, well. Còn hardly (hầu như không) và lately (gần đây) mang nghĩa khác hẳn.
Một gốc, bốn từ loại
Học theo "họ từ" giúp nhớ nhanh hơn từng từ riêng lẻ. Khi thêm thẻ vào Anki, hãy ghi cả họ từ ở mặt sau:
